Advent is a magical time of waiting and preparation. It invites us to pause, reflect and open our hearts. To light candles to dispel the darkness and look forward together to the light that comes with Christmas. But instead of accepting the invitation, we rush through the dark of December, juggling to-do lists, gift requests and family visits - and before we know it, we are more exhausted than enlightened.
Yoga can help you to experience the Advent season in a more relaxed, calm - and yes, contemplative - way. Don't worry, it's not about practicing only the tree (Vrksasana) or the candle (Sarvangasana) and thus your own Advent wreath. We would rather open the doors to a few inspiring impulses from yoga philosophy.
BREAK INSTEAD OF RUSHING
In traditional hatha yoga, asanas often end with a moment of stillness in which we reflect on what the posture has done to us. How about applying this approach to the Advent season? Between buying presents and baking cookies, simply take a few conscious breaks - pause, take a deep breath, briefly check how we are feeling, listen to the Advent candle crackling softly and just “be” for a moment – to recharge your batteries.
BREATH AS A HAVEN OF PEACE
In yoga practice, the breath is our constant companion. It brings us into the here and now. It is all the more astonishing how often we simply forget to breathe - especially during the hectic Advent season. We hold our breath as we tie the perfect bow around the gift ribbon, or breathe shallowly as we push through the crowded shopping aisles. Next time you're in line at the checkout, just take a deep breath in and out. With each inhale, imagine taking in a little bit of Christmas peace and with each exhale, let go of some of the Christmas stress. And before you know it, you'll be humming “Oh Merry Christmas” and smiling.
OF ARRIVAL AND CONSCIOUS ARRIVING
Advent literally means “arrival” and prepares us for the arrival of Christ, the light of the world. It is not only a historical event, but also an invitation to arrive at our own light and to share it with our neighbors. In yoga, we learn that every breath brings us closer to this inner glow. It is about experiencing our own spirit – by the way, the Latin word “spiritus” means “breath” as well as “spirit” – and about a living spirituality: in everyday life and in our community.
CONSCIOUSLY CELEBRATE THE ARRIVAL
Advent literally means “arrival” and prepares us for the coming of Christ. The arrival is not just a historical event, but an invitation to find and share the light within ourselves. Yoga teaches that every breath can bring us closer to this inner connection. It is about experiencing a living spirituality - in everyday life, in community and in trust.
Perhaps we will light one more candle this Advent. Not just on the Advent wreath, but within ourselves. A candle of silence, of mindfulness, of laughter. Then perhaps this year not only Christ will arrive, but also we ourselves.
